New iPad Mini ... Apple's Phil Schiller reveals device to the world
The new smaller handheld device will cost from £269 to £529 and go on sale on
November 2.
It has a 7.9-inch screen and is just 7.2mm thin - 23 per cent less than its bigger brother.
It will have a dual-core A5 chip, FaceTime HD camera and a 5MP iSight camera on the back - which can take 1080p hd VIDEO.
It has ten hours of battery life, just like the 4th generation of iPad. The iPad Mini will be available in both silver and black and weighs just 0.86lbs, with a newly-designed smart cover in a range of colours. But it will have a lower screen resolution than both its main rivals, the Kindle Fire HD and Google's Nexus 7.
Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced marketing chief Phil Schiller to reveal the new device.
He stressed that it wasn’t just a shrunken version of the existing iPad, saying: “It’s an entirely new design. There’s nothing as amazing as this.”
Schiller had earlier told how the new 4th generation iPad - which will anger some fans, coming just six months after the New iPad was revealed - will have a A6X chip, doubling the performance for CPU tasks. It will also have Facetime HD and twice as quick wi-fi. Both devices use Apple's new Lightning Bolt connector.
Apple revealed the new products at the California Theatre, in San Jose. The event was followed online by millions of fans around the world.
Cook told how sales of the original iPad this month passed the 100million mark in the two and a half years since launch.
Earlier he also said the App store had hit a new downloads milestone of 35billion Apps. He added: “The App Store continues to exceed our expectations.”
