The research company noted that its large touch-screen, extensive distribution, and a generous operator subsidy have made the device the best selling phone on planet earth. While the iPhone 4S held its ground in Q2 of this year, Samsung began to see the tide shift in its favor during Q3. Samsung is surely hoping that the trend continues heading into the busy quarter four holiday season.
The problem? The iPhone 5. Neil Mawston, a director at Strategy Analytics thinks that the Galaxy S3 might enjoy a short lived victory. “The Apple iPhone 5 has gotten off to a solid start already with an estimated 6.0 million units shipped globally during Q3 2012,” Mawston said. “We expect the new iPhone 5 to out-ship Samsung’s Galaxy S3 in the coming fourth quarter of 2012 and Apple should soon reclaim the title of the world’s most popular smartphone model.”
No matter how short lived the news is a breath of fresh air for Samsung who was battered earlier this year when Apple won a court decision that would force the company to pay for damages regarding the “copying and infringement” of several Apple iOS features. While Apple will most likely reclaim their title with the iPhone 5, Samsung can at least enjoy things for the time being.
